Garage Door Hinge Repair in Los Angeles

A sharp metallic pop as the door crosses the curve of the track, always at the same height, is the sound of a hinge that has cracked and is snapping open under load. A standard double door carries a dozen or more of them joining one section to the next, with the roller brackets built into their ends. They are unglamorous, they are inexpensive, and a cracked one left in place is one of the more reliable ways to turn a $75 job into a panel replacement.

We renew hinges across Los Angeles from $75, and normally alongside other work since the door is already accessible.

What a Failing Hinge Sounds and Looks Like

Beyond that noise, the evidence is visual. Cracks radiating from the bolt holes, elongated holes where a bolt has been working back and forth for years, a hinge that has torn away from the section face taking steel with it, or a roller that wobbles because the hinge holding it has spread. The numbered hinges in the middle of the door take the most punishment because they carry the bending load as the door flexes over the curve.

Bottom Brackets Are Not Hinges

The fitting at each bottom corner of the door looks like another hinge and is nothing of the sort, which is worth knowing before anybody reaches for a spanner. That bracket anchors the lift cable, and while the door is anywhere above the floor it is holding back the whole force of the springs. People who unbolt one in the belief they are changing a hinge are the reason this trade keeps issuing warnings about it. Ours come off only with the door secured and the tension wound out, which is a different job from the dozen hinges above them and is priced as one.

Why a Cracked Hinge Escalates

The reason we treat these as urgent rather than cosmetic is what happens next. A hinge that has failed passes its share of the load to the sections either side of it, and steel section faces are thin. Within a few weeks the bolt holes in the panel begin to elongate, then tear, and at that point the repair is no longer a $10 hinge but asection, which our panel replacement page prices. A hinge that lets go completely while the door is moving usually takes the door out of its track as well.

Getting the Numbers Right, and What Salt Air Does

Garage door hinges are stamped with a number, commonly 1 through 4, and the number tells you which joint on the door it belongs to, because the offset changes as you move up the door and across the track curve. Fitting a number 2 where a number 3 belongs leaves the section running at the wrong depth in the rail, which binds and wears rollers quickly. Our technician matches them correctly rather than fitting whatever is in the box, and on heavier or insulated doors will move up to a heavier gauge hinge where the originals have proved marginal.

Hinges are galvanised steel and they rust from the pin outward, which means the first sign is stiffness rather than anything visible. Garages in Venice, Playa del Rey, Westchester and down the Harbor take salt air continuously, and hinges there reach the end of their life noticeably sooner than the same door would in Van Nuys. Where we find widespread corrosion, replacing the whole set at once is cheaper than three separate visits and our technician will price it that way.

Doing Hinges While the Door Is Open

Hinges are the obvious thing to deal with when a technician is already at the door for something else, since almost all of the labour is in getting to them rather than in undoing four bolts. On a spring job the door is clamped and the assembly is apart anyway. During a tune up every hinge is being inspected in any case. Renewing a full set at that point costs a fraction of booking it as a visit of its own, which is why our technician will raise it, and why our tune up page is worth reading alongside this one.

What Hinges Cost to Renew

A single hinge replaced starts at $75, with a full set across an ordinary double door usually falling between $145 and $225 by gauge. Where hinges are done alongside rollers or a spring job the labour largely overlaps and the combined price reflects that, which is why we mention it. Bottom brackets, which carry the cable load and are a different job entirely, are quoted separately and always handled with the spring tension released. A cracked hinge is exactly the sort of thing an annual visit is meant to find, as our garage door maintenance page explains.
