Torsion Spring Repair in Los Angeles

Go and stand under the bar running across the wall above your garage door. If one of the springs threaded onto it shows a clean gap of an inch or two where the coil has parted, you have found your fault and you can stop looking. It is the arrangement fitted to nearly every sectional door hung in Los Angeles in the last thirty years, it controls a door far better than the older stretched springs did, and it is also the component that brings most of our vans out on a given morning.

Torsion work starts at $149 and is finished in about an hour. It is emphatically not a job to attempt with household tools.

Reading the Bar Above Your Door

A failed torsion spring is unusually easy to identify once you know where to look. Stand inside the garage and look up at the bar. A healthy spring is a continuous tight coil from one end to the other. That gap is the entire diagnosis, and it is the reason we ask callers to look before describing anything else. In case the spring looks intact and the door still will not move, the fault is more likely a cable, a drum or the opener itself, and our dispatcher can usually narrow it down over the phone from what you describe.

Why the Winding Is the Dangerous Part

A torsion spring on an ordinary double door is wound to several hundred pounds of torque and every bit of that energy has to be released in a controlled way before anything can be unbolted. The correct method uses two properly sized steel winding bars, inserted alternately into the winding cone, with the door clamped and the operator standing to one side. The classic and frequently catastrophic substitute is a screwdriver, which is the wrong diameter, slips out of the cone under load, and sends both itself and the spring across the garage faster than any human reaction. This is the single most injurious job in our trade and it is why we would rather you paid us the $149.

Single Spring or Double

Lighter single doors often run one spring, wider or insulated doors usually run two. Where a heavy door is carrying one spring that somebody fitted to save money, we will say so, because a single spring on a door built for two is working outside its specification and will not reach its rated life. Conversely, a two spring door should always be returned to two. Our technician will tell you which your door is designed for rather than which it currently has.

Cycle Ratings and What They Mean Here

Springs are rated in cycles rather than years, one cycle being up and back down once. The standard rating is about 10,000. A Los Angeles household leaving for work, returning at lunch, going out in the evening and coming home at night runs four a day, which is around 1,500 a year and roughly seven years of spring. A second driver halves it, and a house that uses the garage as its front door halves it again. High cycle springs rated at 20,000 cost modestly more and are the sensible fit on any busy door, which our technician will price for you at the same visit.

Testing It Yourself After We Leave

A properly finished torsion job leaves a door you can check in about ten seconds, and we would sooner you did. Pull the release cord with the door fully down, lift it by hand to waist height and let go of it. A balanced door stays exactly where you put it without creeping upward or sinking. Run it a few times on the opener afterwards and listen for anything rhythmic. Springs bed in slightly across the first week and a small amount of settling is ordinary, but a door that will not hold its position after that is one we want to hear about, and correcting it inside the warranty costs you nothing at all.

What the Job Includes

The door is clamped and secured, the remaining tension is wound out safely, the old springs come off the bar, new springs of the measured specification go on, and they are wound to the correct number of turns for your door's height. Frayed lift cables, which our cable repair page covers, are renewed at this point rather than left for another day, and the cables are reseated evenly on the drums while everything is accessible, end and centre bearings are checked, and anything rough is dealt with then rather than on a second visit, and the door is then balanced by hand and run through several full cycles. Finally the opener's limits and forces are reset to the new tension. Prices start at $149 for a single and $229 for a pair, quoted before dispatch and unchanged afterwards. Where a door turns out to be running the older stretched springs instead, our garage door spring repair page covers both arrangements side by side.
