Garage Door Spring Replacement in Los Angeles

Nothing else on a garage door announces its failure quite so loudly. A spring carries the entire weight of the thing, and the moment one goes the door stops being a door and becomes several hundred pounds of steel hanging in an opening. It is the most common repair we attend anywhere in Los Angeles, it starts at $149 fitted, and in the overwhelming majority of cases our technician arrives with the right spring already on the van.

We replace springs across every neighborhood here, from Sylmar down to San Pedro, and the appointment usually takes about an hour from knocking on your door to watching the thing run properly again.

How We Size the Replacement

A spring is not a generic part and fitting the wrong one leaves you worse off than before. Four measurements define it, namely the wire diameter, the inside diameter of the coil, the overall length and the direction of wind, and our technician takes all four off the door in front of you rather than guessing from the manufacturer's badge. Where a door has been altered since it was hung, and doors in this city acquire insulation panels and heavy timber facings surprisingly often, we weigh it instead. A spring that is even slightly under specification leaves a door too heavy for the opener, and one slightly over sends it floating upward on its own.

Both Springs, Every Time

On a door carrying two springs, both were wound on the same day and both have taken identical punishment, so the survivor of a break is not a healthy spring but a spring a few weeks behind its partner. Replacing only the broken one also leaves the door pulling unevenly, which grinds the cable drums and the end bearings for as long as it lasts. We quote both from the outset, fit both, and the second spring costs a great deal less than a second callout in three months would have.

Balancing and Resetting Afterwards

The part that separates a proper spring job from a quick one happens after the springs are on. The door is disconnected from the opener and lifted by hand, and a correctly balanced door stays exactly where you leave it, including halfway. Tension is adjusted until it does. Then the opener's travel limits and force settings are reset to suit the new tension, which is the step most often skipped and the precise reason a door begins reversing at the floor a week after somebody else changed a spring. All of it is done in front of you.

While the Door Is Apart

Cables, drums and bearings are all exposed during a spring job and it costs nothing to look at them, so our technician does. A cable with frayed strands is on borrowedtime and is far cheaper dealt with now, which our cable repair page covers. Bearings that have started to grumble are a modest part and an enormous noise, and rollers that have gone brittle in the heat get flagged as well. Nothing is fitted without your agreement and nothing appears on the invoice that was not spoken about first.

What It Costs to Leave a Broken Spring

Leaving a snapped spring in place is not a neutral decision, and the bill for it climbs quietly. Every hopeful press of the opener drags a door the motor was never built to lift, which strips the nylon gear inside the head unit within a handful of attempts and turns a $149 job into something nearer $300. The cables, now carrying the load unevenly, begin to fray where they cross the drum. The door works out of square in its opening and starts chewing the rollers down one side. None of that arrives inside a fortnight, but a month of pressing the button in hope generally costs more than the spring ever would.

What a Spring Job Costs

A single torsion spring starts at $149 fitted. A pair on a standard double door generally lands between $229 and $329 depending on size and cycle rating. High cycle springs rated at 20,000 rather than 10,000 add modestly and typically double the life, which on a family door running four times a day is usually the better arithmetic. Approving the work takes the $29 diagnostic straight off the bill, nothing is charged for the journey, and a holiday costs what a weekday morning costs. Parts carry a year and our labour ninety days. Torsion and extension systems, and the way each of them announces its failure, are set out together on our garage door spring repair page.
