Garage Door Roller Replacement in Los Angeles
If your door has started to sound like a goods train, this is very probably the page you want. Ten or twelve small wheels run in the track at every hinge, and they are the part most responsible for whether a door glides or grinds. They cost very little, and they are almost universally ignored until one of them seizes.
A full set fitted starts at $85 and takes under an hour. It is the single most noticeable improvement anybody can make to an ageing garage door for the money.
When Rollers Have Had Enough
Noise first. A grinding, scraping or rumbling note that has crept in over a season is nearly always rollers whose bearings have dried out and started running metal on metal. Then movement, where the door jerks, hesitates or shudders on the way up as individual rollers bind and release. Look at the wheels themselves with the door down. Flat spots, cracks in the nylon, visible wobble on the stem or a wheel that no longer turns freely by hand are all finished. Los Angeles heat is unkind here, since a garage in the Valley that reaches well over a hundred degrees through the summer hardens nylon until it goes brittle and cracks.
Steel, Nylon and Sealed Bearings
Builders fit plain steel rollers because they cost almost nothing, and they are the loudest, shortest lived option available. Nylon rollers running on sealed ball bearings are what we fit as standard, and the difference on a door that has run steel for fifteen years is startling enough that customers ring back to say so. Sealed bearings also keep out the grit that blows into hillside and canyon garages, which is the main thing that kills the unsealed kind. Thirteen ball nylon rollers are the sensible upgrade on a heavy or insulated door.
Replaced as a Complete Set
Changing one roller because it has seized makes very little sense, since every other roller on the door has done the same number of cycles and is at the same point. The labour is nearly all in getting to the door rather than in the rollers themselves, so a full set costs barely more than a handful. The exception is the top roller on each side, which sits in an adjustable bracket and is the one that determines how the door seals against the header, and that one our technician sets rather than simply swaps.
The Bottom Rollers Deserve Care
The rollers in the bottom brackets are held by the same brackets that carry the full cable load, and those are under real tension whenever the door is not resting on the floor. They are not a bracket to unbolt casually, and a good deal of the injury statistics in this trade come from people who did. Our technician secures the door and releases the spring tension properly before touching them, which is a large part of why this is an hour of somebody's time rather than a Saturday project.
Doing It Alongside Other Work
Rollers are the obvious thing to have done while a technician is already at your door for something else. On a spring job, covered on our spring replacement page, the door is already secured and the labour is largely paid for. The same applies during a tune up. A set of rollers is $85, hinges are modest alongside them, and the combination is what turns a door that everybody in the house has learned to wince at back into one nobody notices. A new door arrives with new rollers already on it, which is one of the things our garage door installation page accounts for.
