Garage Door Panel Replacement in Los Angeles
The reversing car is how most of these begin, and the assumption that follows it is nearly always wrong. A sectional door is built from four or five horizontal panels hinged together, and one damaged panel does not automatically condemn the other four. Where the rest of the door is sound and the section is still available, replacing one panel starts at $195 and takes a couple of hours.
Where it genuinely is not worth it, we will tell you so at the quoting stage rather than halfway through, because a bad panel repair is money spent twice.
How Panels Get Damaged in Los Angeles
The reversing car is the classic, and it is nearly always the bottom section that takes it, since that is what a bumper meets. After that comes rust along the bottom edge, which bites hardest near the water and in any garage where rain runs across the slab toward the opening. Then impact from a basketball hoop, a falling branch after a winter storm, or a break in attempt where somebody has prised the bottom bar and bowed the section. Timber and timber faced doors, common through Los Feliz and Hancock Park, delaminate and split at the stiles once the finish has gone.
Repair or Replace the Section
A shallow dent in a steel skin with the internal struts and stiles intact is often worth leaving alone, and we will say so rather than sell you a panel. A section is worth replacing where the skin is holed or split, where the internal reinforcement is bent, where rust has eaten through the bottom edge, or where the panel no longer sits flat and is fighting the track. The test our technician applies is whether the section is still structurally carrying its share of the door, since a compromised panel puts load through the hinges either side of it and cracks them next.
Matching an Existing Door
This is the part that decides most of these jobs. Panels have to match in profile, in the pattern pressed into the face, in the gauge of steel and in colour, and doors more than about fifteen years old are frequently out of production entirely. Where the manufacturer is still making the section we order it and the join is invisible. Where they are not, a close but imperfect match is sometimes available, and paint will usually take care of the rest on a solid coloured door but not on a woodgrain or an embossed finish. Our technician photographs the door and gives you a straight answer before you commit to anything.
When a New Door Is the Better Buy
Two or more damaged sections on a door of any age generally tips the arithmetic toward replacement, as does a door where the panels are sound but rusted across the board, or one where an exact match no longer exists and the front of a house will end up looking patched. Bear in mind too that a new door brings new track, new springs, new rollers and a warranty across the whole assembly. Our technician will give you both figures side by side before you commit to either.
Ordering, Fitting and Cost
A single steel section supplied and fitted starts at $195 for a standard single door and from $295 on a double, with insulated and timber faced sections running higher. Ordering typically takes a few days, and where the door is unsafe or insecure in the meantime our technician will make it usable on the first visit at no extra charge. Hinges and struts replaced alongside the section are quoted openly. Everything is written down before an order is placed. Where an impact has left the opening insecure rather than merely untidy, our emergency garage door repair page describes what happens that same evening.
